Types of Visa/Permit Available

  1. Reentry Permit (Sainyuukoku Kyoka) If you plan to travel abroad while staying in Japan, it is necessary to recieve a Re-entry permit. This is valid until the end of your present visa.Cost: Single Reentry Permit = 3000yen and Multiple Reentry Permit = 6000yen

  2. Extension Permit (Zairyu Kikan Henshin Kyoka) This is necessary for a foreign national who is wishing to stay in Japan past the authorized period of stay (as indicated in one's passport). Applications must be made at least 10 days before the current visa expires. Cost = 4000yen.

  3. Permit to Engage in an Activity Other Than That Permitted By the Status of Residency Previously Granted (Shikakugai Katsudo Kyoka) For example, a student wanting to take up a part-time job or a dependent wanting to teach English privately at home will need to apply for one of these before engaging in the activity. Cost = 4000yen.

  4. Change Permit (Zairyu Shikaku Henko No Kyoka) This is necessary if the foreign national wishes to cease the present activity they are involved in and to participate in an activity not covered by the present permit. Cost=4000yen.

  5. Permission for Permanent Residence (Eijyu Kyoka) As the law stands now if you have been married to a Japanese for 3 years or more (ie you have had a spouse visa for 3 years or more) you are eligible to apply for a permanent visa. If you are not married you may apply for a permanent visa after living in Japan for 5 years or more. Please confirm your situation with the Immigration office before applying for this.

  6. Acquisition Permit Necessary in order to register a foreign baby born in Japan.

  7. Certificate of Authorized Employment (Shuro Shikaku Shomeisho) This is a certificate issued to a foreign national whose requested employment has been approved by the Regional Immigration Bureau.

Necessary Documents

When applying for any of the above permits you will need to have the following documents:

  • Valid passport
  • Valid alien registration card
  • Appropriate application form (available at the immigration office)
  • "Certificate for payment of fee" form (with revenue stamps attached)

When applying for any of the visas no.2.- 7. other documents are also necessary and this will vary with regards to your present status, so be sure to contact the immigration office before making your application.

Processing Time

The processing time of an application can take anything from 2 weeks to 2 months (longer for Permanent Visas) However, a Reentry Permit can be issued on the same day, providing an application for another permit is not made at the same time.

Revenue Stamps (Shunyu Inshi)

Revenue stamps for the value of the permit(s) required are to be purchased before submitting your application. They are to be attached to the form marked "Certificate for payment of fee". Revenue stamps can be bought at post offices.

From Koriyama station, take a bus to Koriyama City Hall. It is about a 5 minute walk from the bus stop "Koriyama shiyakusho".
