If you are moving or leaving, be sure to complete the following

- Notify city hall of address changes (alien registration, health
insurance, national pension)
- Notify the telephone companies that you use and arrange for
connection/disconnection
- Notify gas, electricity, water, and sewage companies of your
plans and arrange for connection/disconnection
- Cancel or update your subscriptions to newspapers, magazines,
and newsletters
- Arrange for bill payment, automatic transfers, credit card payments
and notify the bank of your address change
- Arrange for cancellation or update of your car insurance policy
- Notify the post office of your address change for automatic
forwarding for one year
SENDING STUFF HOME
Airlines
- If you are travelling abroad by plane, you will be able to
take 2 suitcases and 2 small carry-ons with you. If your bags
are overweight or you have extra suitcases, you will be charged
an
extra fee.
Usually the airline fees are quite expensive, so this is not
the
best option.
Postal Services
- The post office has strict limits, but it is good if you aren't
shipping very much. There is a strict 20 kilogram limit. Also,
the total size of the package cannot exceed 2.00 metres, with
the maximum length being 1.05. To figure out the dimensions of
your box, take a ruler and measure the length and then add the
circumference.
- Air Mail - [using planes] - 2 weeks or less, expensive but fast
- SAL (Economy Air) - [using available space on planes] - 2-3
weeks, cheaper than air, faster than surface
- Surface Mail - [using ships and buses] - 4-6 weeks, cheap but
slow
- Be sure to ask about "book bags" for shipping books
at a special rate.

Prices vary widely, so call and ask for an estimate on sending one
cubic metre from Fukushima to your destination. (Prices can range
from *25,000 to *80,000 for one cubic metre!) Remember to ask whether

packing services (if you require them), whether they supply crates,
and whether they provide insurance.
